  • All fiber optic cable, including the drop cable that connects to the road/pole is owned by the City of Nelson.

    What type of fiber optic service is provided by the City of Nelson?

  • The City of Nelson provides dark fiber only. The electronics/equipment to use, or “light up” the fiber, along with all associated installation and support are available through DHC.

    What kind of equipment do I need to buy in order to use fiber?

  • At a minimum you will need a router that supports fiber optic connections or a combination of a new switch and router. DHC will evaluate your network equipment/requirements and provide a quotation to suit your individual requirements.

    Why is a fiber optic connection better than other services currently available in Nelson?

  • Fiber optics is MUCH faster, and by design far more reliable.
  • The speed is synchronous, such that upload and download speed is identical. Typical current connections may offer 0.5 or 1.0 megabit upload speeds. DHC’s fiber optic service currently offers uploads speeds of 100+ megabits per second.
  • Installation and support is provided locally, by local companies employing local technicians.

    What if I want to connect my house, can I do that?

  • Yes, as long as you meet the following criteria:
       -You have a City of Nelson business license
       -You are located within a reasonable distance of existing fiber and are willing to pay all construction costs required to extend service to your house.

    What if I am in a multi-tenant building, can I save on cost?

  • Yes, special packages are available for multi-tenant buildings. Pricing and configuration will vary depending on the number of connections provided.

    What are the costs?

    Initial/Installation Costs

  • Install/construction cost will vary depending on location and proximity to the fiber optic cable. Prices start at $500 and can be $3500+. Exact construction costs will be provided by the City of Nelson.
  • There is a one time $250.00 administration fee to the City of Nelson.
  • IT equipment cost and internal wiring/networking will vary depending on customer requirements.

    Monthly Costs

  • The city of Nelson charges $150.00 per month for a 100 megabit capable strand or $300.00 per month for a 1000 megabit capable strand.
  • A monthly internet access package will have to be selected based on customer need, samples include:
       -$75 25×25 Mbps, 250GB transfer allowance
       -$95 50×50 Mbps, 400GB transfer allowance
       -$150 100×100 Mbps, 500GB transfer allowance
       -$300 100×100 Mbps, 1000GB transfer allowance

  • Optional cloud services provided by DHC including hosted services, hosted storage, remote back ups, and more as needed.
